“Free” Estate Planning Legal Documents

by Barry H Zimmer (The Zimmer Law Firm)

Being part of a family means that one day you will likely experience the passing of someone you love. Many Baby Boomers and their parents have experienced loss more than once in their adult lives. If this describes you, take a few moments to remember what happened.
Who was in charge of the decedent’s estate? How difficult was it for that person to take care of everything? Were the departed family member’s wishes about artificial life support or heroic measures made known? How much of the estate was spent on lawyers, court costs, professional fees, taxes, and other expenses? How long did it take?
If you have had several family members pass away within your memory, think about whether some estates ended up better than others. What made the difference between them? There can only be one answer – the best results occur where someone gave thought and attention to what is likely to happen and what the deceased wanted to happen, and planned to make it so.
The problem is that most people cannot know what makes certain estates more difficult than others.. Fortunately, there are people who do know: estate planning attorneys. They have the expertise and skills to know what makes a difference.
What exactly do estate planning lawyers do? You might say they prepare legal documents like wills, trusts, and powers of attorney. This is technically true but this statement is misleading. The legal documents are the result of the process of planning. In a sense the documents are FREE – what you pay for is the know how and experience of the lawyer to guide you in making good decisions. The legal documents embody the results of that process and are the means to the end.
When you are ready to make an estate plan, consult an experienced lawyer who focuses on estate planning. After all – wouldn’t you want your family members to do the same thing so that their estate is as easy to handle as possible for your family?
