Involvement with truck crashes
by David B. Ross (Ross & Ross, LLC)According to the Department of Transportation there are on average 500,000 trucking accidents each year. Many of these accidents are due to the truck driver’s negligence or failure to follow safety regulations.
Federal and state governments regulate traveling to ensure it is done safely. There are regulations about weight, loads, rest periods, and equipment maintenance. Companies and drivers attempt to maximize their profits by getting around these regulations. This allows an unsafe driving environment. Drivers also drive at a high rate of speed to allow them to deliver more loads.
Drivers have a set amount of hours that they are allowed to drive. Drivers and companies go beyond these hours, and sometimes keep two sets of log books. Driver fatigue causes accidents. Driver fatigue may be the most common cause of trucking accidents.
Another related issue is Sleep Apnea. It is commonly known that truck drivers tend to be overweight. This is linked to sleep apnea. Drivers who have sleep apnea are more likely to cause accidents.
