Mylan Generic Keppra AttorneysMylan Generic Keppra Attorneys
When we are ill, we are often prescribed medications to help combat our ailment. However, even though two drugs may intend to serve the same purpose, no two prescription medications are alike. This notion is never more evident than with pharmaceutical company Mylan’s generic version of the prescription medication Keppra.
Keppra and generic substitutes for Keppra are anti-seizure medications, meant to help epileptics prevent seizures. The drugs work by limiting the number of signals transmitted in the brain, particularly since seizures are caused when an overload of said signals essentially short circuits either a portion of or the entire brain. However, as is the case with all generic medications, while the active ingredient may be the same as its brand name counterpart, the inactive ingredients used are never exactly the same.
According to guidelines established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a generic drug is only required to be a “bioequivalent” to the original name-brand drug it is attempting to copy. However, the FDA’s definition of a “bioequivalent” allows for as much as a 20% deviation in ingredients, meaning that inactive ingredients used are allowed to differ a great deal. Furthermore, the ways in which a generic medication’s inactive ingredients help bind a medication together can greatly impact the generic drug’s effectiveness, consequently disallowing it from performing in consumers as promised and creating negative side effects.
Mylan Generic LVT Effectiveness
Mylan’s generic version of Keppra has been known to not only be ineffective in treating seizures in some individuals, but actually exasperate the issue altogether, making seizures worse than they were prior to the individual taking the medication. The ineffectiveness of Mylan generic Levetiracetam (LVT) is one of the primary concerns of consumers and pharmaceutical liability attorneys as it has even been known to cause breakthrough seizures in epileptics that have been seizure free for years. Furthermore, the side effects created by generic forms of Keppra versus the side effects created by Keppra itself also tend to differ, causing some individuals who never experienced any side effects while taking Keppra to suffer a variety of side effects once they begin taking the generic form of the drug. Specifically, in addition to breakthrough seizures, many other debilitating side effects has been known to become a significant problem for those individuals who switch from taking Keppra to Mylan’s generic substitute.
Switching to Mylan Generic Keppra
In general, physicians and other medical professionals often switch from prescribing brand name medications to generic forms of that medication as a means of saving money. However, in the case of anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), many neurologists emphasize consitency, suggesting a change in prescription only when absolutely neccesary. Along these lines, another cause for alarm in consumers and pharmaceutical liability attorneys is the circumvention of doctors’ advice by pharmacies that switch AED prescriptions to, or between generics. The transition from taking Keppra to taking a generic substitute can be smooth or problematic, hit or miss. However, when it misses it misses big, as a single breakthrough seizure can greatly impact one’s quality of life, legal status, and hopes for ultimately being free of the condition.
